Mercer Island Firefighters respond to a variety of medical and fire emergencies. Sadly these sometimes involve a child in some capacity. The child may be the patient, or just a witness.
Since about 1985 the Mercer Island Fire Department has been part of a program that has since been identified as the "Care Bear" program. The concept of the program is to provide police officers and firefighters with small stuffed animals that they can give to a child, to assist in the process of bringing them comfort during an emergency.
This program has been highly successful in aiding firefighters and police officers in dealing with incidents involving children. The program is offered by almost every police and fire agency within the region. There is even a local radio station that sponsors an annual drive to collect donations for the purchase of these bears.
Recently Mercer Island received a generous donation from a local family. The family has offered to provide the Mercer Island Fire Department with an ongoing supply of stuffed animals for local children during emergency events. Normally these bears were purchased from the Department's operating budget but now this will not be necessary.
